Commission Your Pet Portrait With Anna

I love painting pets!

I have painted various subjects through my life but it wasn’t until I painted my first dog portrait that I felt that spark you need to feel as a creative. I had been missing my German Shepherd ‘Joey’ who I had lost years before and wasn’t in a position to have another ‘fur baby’. I found that getting involved with other people’s pets and painting them was hugely satisfying and brought happiness to many, as well as to me.

So it will be my pleasure to create a Pet portrait for you!

It’s quite a simple process:  I work from photos and you are welcome to send me as many as you’d like but please remember that they need to be good quality (the exception would be when a pet has past and you only have what you have). I also understand if you are surprising someone with a portrait of their pet that you might have limited images for me.

Next you have to decide on what size canvas you would like and what style would suit you the best (see below). You can ask me if you feel unsure. Larger canvases are available on request.

You have the choice between an acrylic- or oil portrait:

  • Acrylic (see Victoria, Eliot and Charlie below) Allows me to paint a very detailed and layered portrait where I can come and go. Acrylic paint dries very fast which means you’ll have your portrait within a short time (it usually takes me 10-14 days to complete a painting and varnishing).
  • Oil ( see the little Dachshund above) I work with Water-mixable oils that are friendly for the environment and are odourless. I work in an ‘all prima’ style so the painting will be done in a couple of days but needs 3-4 weeks to touch-dry. It takes 6-8 months before an oil painting can be varnished. I will take care of that if it’s a local job but most clients get a framing shop where they live to do it ( it’s a very simple job).

The prices below are for one subject only but if you have more then one pet and want them all on the same canvas, no problem. Just add $100/ subject. You might want to be in the painting yourself!

If you would like to have your pet set into a particular background or maybe dressed in a costume, I will give you an individual quote.

Which canvas style suits you?

You have a few options here as far as thickness which is good news. Which one you choose depends on what suits your space and if you would like your Portrait framed or not. If you know that you would like you portrait to sit in a floating frame (see picture below) I can help organise that for a fee.

Here are your options:

  • Thickness – 3.8 cm (1.5 inches) No framing required but would look great in a ‘floating’ frame. (All canvas sizes are available in this thickness).
  • Thickness – 1.8 cm (0.7 inches) Framing optional. Would also suit a ‘floating’ frame. (Fewer canvas sizes available in this thickness so ask me).
  • Thickness – 0.3 cm (0.12 inches)  Canvas Boards are best framed in the traditional way and you’ll have endless choices. (Fewer canvas sizes available in this thickness so ask me).
